Ear training for singers: relative pitch and inner-ear ability. Practice every day to improve pitch accuracy.
All good singers have great ears. All bad singers have bad ears β it is that exceptional.
Music makes sense to us naturally. You can feel tonality and melody without knowing music theory β and still notice when one note is wrong out of thousands. That inner sense is what ear training for singers develops. Without it, vocal training is guesswork: you can move the voice and still miss pitch. With it, you hear the note first, then sing it. This set of trainings is the music sense singers actually need: relative pitch and inner-ear ability. Understand what you hear, and pitch accuracy follows.
A few people are born with perfect pitch and a strong music sense. Most of us are not, and perfect pitch is very hard to acquire later. Ear training here does not promise perfect pitch. It trains relative pitch β hearing a note against another note β plus the inner ear you use to sing in tune. The βperfect pitchβ drill in the plan is simpler than the name: sing back the same notes you hear. That is pitch matching, and it is one ear training exercise among several, not a claim that you will wake up with perfect pitch.
The 10-day ear training plan of attack walks through the skills in order. Putting them in writing (not only on the image) is what search can actually read:
β’ Pitch recognition β find the same notes on piano.
β’ Off-note sense β hear whether a note is on-pitch or off-pitch.
β’ Perfect pitch drill β sing the notes you hear.
β’ Direction sense β hear if a note is higher or lower than another.
β’ Inclination β bend a note by one semitone.
β’ Intervals β the vertical relationship between two notes (the same skill behind singing harmony).
β’ Chords β recognize a chord and break out its notes.
β’ Keys β identify key signatures.
β’ Daily practice β a little ear training every day.
β’ Mastery β pitch, intervals, melody, chords and solfege working together as full aural skills.
For best results, do the ear training exercises every day. Short daily repetition builds pitch accuracy faster than a long session once a week. You do not need to start as a theory student. You need to listen, match, and repeat until the sense that is already in you is fully online. When the ear is ready, the next step is putting intervals to work in harmony. Until then, stay on this ear training plan.
