A vocal exercise for singers: laugh like a kid in your high, middle and low range. That natural mix is the same musculature as mixed voice.
Laugh with control in your high, middle and low range
Laughing and crying are universal. Everyone does both. They are called the best medicine for stress β and they are also the best medicine for stress in the voice. When the voice is tight, a forced βsingingβ setup often recruits extra muscles. A real laugh does the opposite: it uses a loose, natural coordination. This vocal exercise is to laugh on purpose. Laugh like a kid. Crying has a similar effect; this drill stays with laughter so it stays the safest exercise in the set. The benefits are vocal, emotional, and physical.
Babies laugh and cry with very weak swallowing muscles, so they find the most natural, relaxed sounds of their mix easily. Adults often reverse that: swallowing and outer muscles tense, and mixed voice disappears. A laugh uses the same natural musculature as mixed voice. You are not inventing a new setup. You are borrowing a coordination the body already knows, then keeping it while you sing. That is why this belongs with mixed voice training, not as a joke warmup.
Do not dump the laugh in one comfortable spot. Control it in your high, middle, and low vocal range. High, middle, and low each ask for a slightly different mix. If the laugh stays easy in all three, the mix musculature is still the one in charge. If the laugh gets tight, swallowed, or pushed as you go higher or lower, that is the same problem as a forced gear change: the wrong muscles have taken over. Ease off, laugh like a kid again, and slide through the vocal range with control.
Laugh as many times as you can, every single day. Short and often beats one theatrical session. This is one of the safest vocal exercises for singers: no strain, no theory, and it still trains mixed voice across the vocal range. When the laugh is easy in high, middle, and low, take that coordination into mixed voice training.
